Guwahati: In pursuant to the Government of India’s announcement regarding a Liberalized and Accelerated Phase 3 Strategy of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme from May 1, 2021, the Assam Government has decided to provide free COVID-19 vaccines to everyone between 18-45 years.
The health and family welfare department of Assam has placed orders for about 1 crore doses with the Bharat Biotech International on May 20, 2021.
In a letter from the Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Samir K Sinha wrote to the Chairman and Managing Director of the Bharat Biotech International in Hyderabad requesting for the COVID vaccines.
Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier informed in his official Twitter handle that the Govt of Assam shall utilize the funds collected in Assam Arogya Nidhi last year for the procurement of these COVID vaccines.
“Assam will give FREE vaccines to everyone from 18-45 years. GOI is giving free vaccines for 45 +. Funds collected in Assam Arogya Nidhi last year shall be utilized for procurement of vaccines. Today itself, we’ve placed orders for 1 cr doses with @BharatBiotech,” tweeted Himanta.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal took to Twitter saying, “Assam Govt has decided to give free #COVID19 vaccines to everyone between 18-45 years. Our commitment to the people remain steadfast, as we together move forward under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji to fight the pandemic.”
