COVID19 Positive Murder Accused fled from MMCH: Held in Meghalaya

GUWAHATI: Assam police on Tuesday succeeded to nab two dreaded criminals who were accused in murder and dacoity cases, including one Gofur who was earlier tested Covid positive, from Ladrymbai in neighbouring state of Meghalaya.

Gofur, already arrested, fled on Monday from police custody when he was being taken to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) following testing positive with coronavirus.

Assam police director-general Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “Gofur had run away on Monday while being taken for treatment but state police have succeeded to nab him today.”

Sharing the success on Twitter, state police posted the duo’s picture in PPE kits and wrote: “Corona giveth & Corona taketh away! When you are a #Covid19 + murder accused and try escaping from MMC Hospital, Guwahati, but end up in custody, socially distanced & PPE’d, along with a co-accused. Stellar work @KamrupPolice for apprehending them from Ladrymbai, Meghalaya.”

The police chief said that a task force was formed by the state government after a proposal from the state police department to enforce Covid protocols in the city.

“Since state police also have to keep a tab on criminals and law and order situation, the task force can concentrate on enforcing the SOP issued by the government,” he added.

The task force including police personnel and district administration officials would enforce Covid appropriate behaviour in public and decided to slap a fine of Rs 1000 for not wearing masks in public places.
