COVID19: Rs 1000 fine for not wearing masks in Bihu functions; Task Force formed

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (metro) district administration has imposed a fine of Rs 1000 for anyone not wearing a mask while attending Bihu functions within its jurisdiction from Saturday.

The decision was taken after the district administration held an emergency meeting with all the Bihu committees from the city.

“A Task Force was also constituted with the nominated officials of district administration, city police and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The Task Force will monitor whether public has followed the COVID-19 standing protocols in public places or not. The Task Force will also impose fine of Rs. 1000 to the non-abiding persons for non-adherence of COVID-19 protocols. This order will come into force with immediate effect,” said an official statement by the Kamrup (metro) administration.

The state government, ahead of Bihu, issued an SOP for the Bihu celebration and restricted the culture programs till 11 pm.

The metro administration has also asked the Bihu committees to conduct thermal scanning of all the attendees of the function and cultural nights at the entry points.

On Saturday, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “There should not be any reason for confrontation. The state government has not stopped the Bihu committees from organizing functions but due to the surge in Covid positive cases, the restrictions were imposed.”

The minister informed that the health department has started conducting Covid tests in localities where Bihu functions were held recently and large gatherings were witnessed too.

He also suggested the Bihu committees of areas where Covid cases have gone up to consider cancelling their programs.

Assam Police on Saturday also said that they would slap FIRs against the artists and the organizing committees if found to be flouting the SOP.
