Guwahati: In view of the fact that no crescent moon sightings reported from any part of Assam or in India, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in Assam on Friday i.e. on May 3, 2022.
The announcement was made by Maulana Fakhruddin Ahmed Qasimi, President of Central Hilal Committee Assam and Imdad Hussain, Secretary on Sunday in a press statement.
It is to be noted that Eid marks the end of the month-long fasting period of Ramadan. The religious festival is celebrated in the month of Shawwal. This year, it begun from May 2, 2022.
Much like the beginning of the fasting period, its end also depends on the sighting of the moon.
The crescent moon is first seen in Saudi Arabia, and it is only after that the rest of the world celebrates the festival. The date of Eid, hence, differs from country to country.
