‘Cut Off Assam’ Remark: Hunt On For Sharjeel Imam, Brother Detained In Bihar

Multiple FIRs have been lodged against Sharjeel Imam under the relevant sections of the IPC for his alleged statement that Assam, Northeast should be cut off from the rest of India

Trouble seems to be mounting for the alleged mastermind of Shaheen Bagh protest and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam. A manhunt has been launched to nab him. Police teams from Bihar and Delhi conducted multiple raids in different parts of the country to nab the former JNU student.

As the Aligarh Police and Delhi Police hunt for Imam, two more cases have been filed against Imam. Police of six states Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have booked Imam under the relevant sections of the IPC for his alleged statement that Assam, Northeast should be cut off from the rest of India. He is also facing the charge of sedition.

On the other hand, Bihar Police on January 28th, 2020 detained brother of Imam. Jehanabad Police raided his ancestral house in Kako police station area. Two of his relatives and their driver were also detained for interrogation and let off thereafter.

In a shocking video shared by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, Imam is seen making controversial statements saying that Muslims are in such numbers that they can cut out the entire Northeast from the rest of India “if not permanently than may be for few months”.

In the video, Imam says, “If we have 5 lakh organised people then we can permanently cut North-east from India or at least for one-two month. Put so much (unclear) on the roads and tracks that they cannot even remove it for a month. It is our responsibility to isolate Assam from India, then only they will listen to our voice.”

He adds, “It is our responsibility to cut Assam from India. You know what is happening to the Muslims in Assam…NRC is already applied there, they have been put in detention centers. We may come to know that in the coming six-eight months all Bengalis have been killed either Hindu or Muslim. If we want to help Assam, then we will have to stop the way to Assam for the Indian Army and other supplies. We can do it because the Chicken neck of India (Siliguri Corridor) belongs to the Muslims.”

As per reports, Imam is a graduate in computer science from IIT-Mumbai and had shifted to Delhi for pursuing research at the Centre for Historical Studies at the JNU.

The Chief Proctor of the JNU has summoned Imam to appear before him by February 3rd, 2020 to explain his position on the alleged provocative speeches made by him.
