Dalai Lama apologises to boy’s family after kissing video triggers row

Guwahati: The spiritual leader of Tibet, Dalai Lama on Monday issued a statement apologising after a video showed him kissing a minor boy on his lips, which sparked a row.

The Dalai Lama has apologised after outrage over a video of him kissing a child on the lips and asking him to suck my tongue at a public event.

Taking to Twitter, the official account of Dalai Lama said, “A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug.”

“His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” he added.

“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident,” he tweeted.

The viral video, which has one million views on Twitter, showed the Dalai Lama kissing a young boy on the lips and touching foreheads with him as an audience claps and laughs.

The video triggered a huge backlash, with Twitter users denouncing it as “disgusting” and “unbecoming”.

Last month, the Dalai Lama named an eight-year-old US-born Mongolian boy as the 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche, the third highest rank in Tibetan Buddhism.
