Guwahati: In another setback to the Congress party ahead of Assam Assembly polls, Debabrata Saikia, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, has lost the post of the Leader of the Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Assam speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami has withdrawn the leader of opposition status of Congress legislator Dababrata Saikia after his party’s strength in the House went below the minimum number required for the post.
“The present strength of the Indian National congress Legislature Party, Assam Legislative Assembly is not equal to the quorum fixed to constitute a sitting of the House, that is one-sixth of the total number of Members of the House as required under the aforementioned provisions and therefore, the Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly, has been pleased to withdraw the recognition of Shri Debabrata Saikia, MLA, as Leader of the Opposition, Assam Legislative assembly January 1,” the notification issued by the assembly secretariat stated.
The strength of the Congress in the State Assembly fell with the demise of former Assembly speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi and former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, besides the resignation of party MLAs Ajanta Neog and and Rajdeep Gowala.
Saikia received the status of leader of opposition, equivalent to a cabinet rank, in 2016 by virtue of Congress strength of 26 in the House of 126, which were five seats more than required number 21.
