The students of the prestigious Delhi University joined the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government is all set to table the Bill in the Parliament on December 9th, 2019.
The students will stage anti-Bill protest in the premises of the varsity from 2 pm onwards. The students of various colleges and universities of Assam have also joined the protests after the Union Cabinet passed the Bill on December 4th, 2019.
The agitators are claiming that the Bill goes against the country’s spirit of secularism and demanded the government to withdraw the bill immediately.
Shouting slogans against the Bill, and both the Centre and the state government, the protesting students said that the Bill would harm the Assamese community, Assamese language, culture and tradition.
The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and entered India.
The students from different universities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and the Aligarh Muslim University along with the members of the All India Students’ Association gathered at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 7th, 2019 to protest against the Bill. The protest programme was organised by an NGO named United Against Hate.
Back in Northeast, Gauhati University, Tezpur University, Dibrugarh University, Sikkim University along with several other colleges have joined the protest against the Bill.
