The violence over the amended Citizenship Act continues to escalate in Northeast Delhi. As many as 22 people including a policeman have lost their lives in the violence so far while over 200 people including 48 police personnel have been injured.
The Delhi Police on February 26th, 2020, dispersed the crowd of people, who had gathered outside chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, on the intervening night of February 25th and 26th, 2020 demanding action against perpetrators of Delhi violence and seeking restoration of peace.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court directed the police to ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for people injured in Delhi violence. A total of 11 FIRs have been registered in connection with violence in Northeast Delhi.
Fresh incidents of stone-pelting and arson were reported from Jafrabad, Babarpur, Brahmpuri, Gorakh Park, Maujpur, Bhajanpura, Kabir Nagar, Chand Bagh, Gokulpuri, Karawal Nagar, Khajuri Khas and Kardampuri. Many places witnessed the throwing of an acid-like substance and hot water on people and security forces. Five people with acid burns are admitted in Lok Nayak Hospital.
The violence drew sharp reactions from United States lawmakers with the mainstream media prominently reporting it along with the just-concluded visit of President Donald Trump. Reacting to the violence that has remained unfazed since February 22nd, 2020, US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said the “deadly surge of religious intolerance in India is horrifying.
The clashes between pro- and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters continued for a third consecutive day, resulting in over 100 people injured. A total of 11 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence.
The administration imposed section 144 in the region. Delhi Minorities Commission appeals to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal for the imposition of curfew in violence-affected areas. According to reports, the district administration has sealed three borders adjoining Northeast Delhi and shut down bars and pubs in Ghaziabad.

Meanwhile, Delhi government announced that private and government schools in violence-affected Northeast Delhi will remain closed today. Manish Sisodia said all internal examinations have been postponed by schools. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) decided to postpone Class 10 and 12 Board exams scheduled for Wednesday in Northeast Delhi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled his pending visit to Thiruvananthapuram over violence in Delhi. He was supposed to visit Kerala to attend a prayer meeting for Padma Vibhushan P Parameswaranji.
