Guwahati: In a sudden move, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Dipanka Kumar Nath resigned from his post in the state’s largest student group on Thursday.

The AASU convened a meeting at Gauhati University on Thursday to discuss several issues. Earlier, the state executive committee of AASU has taken charge on November 30, 2020, at a ceremony held at Gauhati University.

However, the reason behind Nath’s resignation was still unknown. He said, “The reason behind my decision is completely personal and related to my family. I would expect cooperation from the organization on my decision.”

In 2020, he was re-elected as the AASU president while Shankarjyoti Baruah was named the new general secretary of the student body.

Nath also informed that for the next conference the present vice president Utpal Sarma will take over as the acting president that will be held in Morigaon.

Nath’s resignation from the student group has sparked an array of speculations amongst the student group and state politics.

A section claimed that Dipanka Kumar Nath was likely to join active politics soon and might be joining the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and seeking a ticket from the Barpeta or Guwahati constituency in the future.

On the other hand, many claimed that Nath has resigned from the post as he was likely to get married soon.
