Guwahati: Assam Agriculture minister Atul Bora on Sunday said that the disqualification of Congress Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha is the result of “political immaturity.”
Bora said, “This move is the result of Rahul’s political immaturity. Rahul Gandhi should know how to behave with the Prime Minister of the country.”
“I saw that Congress party workers are protesting across the nation,” Minister added.
On Friday, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha a day after being sentenced to two years in jail in a defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark in 2019 during a poll rally in Karnataka. The notification came hours after Gandhi came to the Lok Sabha on Friday morning.
However, the court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.
Following Rahul’s disqualification, leaders of almost all opposition parties rallied and accused the BJP of doing “vindictive politics.”
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi became the victim of his own act as back in 2013 his party withdrew the ordinance to prevent the immediate disqualification of lawmakers after conviction following his criticism.
He further added that Rahul should have apologised immediately after defaming a community but even after five years, he remains unrepentant. With his comments, Rahul “intentionally abused the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community” of the country, Sarma said.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, while addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Gandhi said that the BJP allegations against him, and his disqualification were aimed at distracting from “the panic that Prime Minister is feeling”.
“I am not scared of threats, disqualification and prison sentences and I will not back down from asking questions on the Adani issue”, Gandhi said.
“This is the whole drama that is orchestrated to defend the Prime Minister from the simple question- Who’s Rs 20,000 crore went to Adani’s shell companies?”, he added.
“I only speak the truth, it is my work and I will keep doing it even if I get disqualified or get arrested. This country has given me everything and that is why I do this. I will keep asking questions about Adani’s issue, they cannot scare me by disqualification or putting me in jail”, Rahul further added.
