Dissoi Valley Firing: Congress urges Assam Govt to enhance security cover of MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi

Guwahati: Condemning the attack on MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi in Dissai Valley reserve forest area in Mariani, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) urged to the Assam Government to enhance the security cover of the MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi at the earliest.

APCC strongly appealed before the Assam Government to take it up with the Government of Nagaland to ensure that such incidents don’t recur in future.

On Thursday, few suspected Nagaland-based miscreants opened fire at the Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and a team who were visiting Assam Nagaland borders in Jorhat district.

Assam Police earlier on Friday had advised the Nagaland side to immediately disengage from the Dissoi Valley reserve forest where suspected Nagaland-based miscreants opened fire at the Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and a team.

Following the instructions of state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, special director general of state police GP Singh on Friday patrolled the area and admitted of illegal encroachment from the Nagaland side villagers.

He said, “An initial discussion happened with high officials of Nagaland’s administration and police and they were strongly advised to disengage from the area immediately.”

The top cop added that they have collected videos, images and GPS locations of all the areas where alleged encroachments were happening inside the forest area.

GP Singh also informed that there will be a meeting between the border departments of both the states within Sunday. A joint patrolling by forest departments of both the states in the area was also advocated.

Meanwhile, in a press statement, APCC said, “It is a very serious issue and shocking that he was attacked by miscreants in the Assam- Nagaland border area. The Government of Assam should immediately apprehend the culprits. Since the matter of border dispute in the area is in court, in principle both Nagaland and Assam had agreed to a joint patrolling in the forest area in September 2020. Hence even after such an arrangement how and who perpetrated such an attack is a grave matter. The life of an elected representative of Assam has been threatened while he was discharging his duties for which APCC urges the Government that the security cover of the MLA should also be enhanced at the earliest.”
