GUWAHATI: Gone were the days when people used to celebrate the Diwalis, a grand religious festival of the Hindus, with firecrackers that sparked the open canopy even at night. Both imported and home-made firecrackers available in a different size, volume and styles triggered fun starting from the younger ones to the old during the occasion. However, public concern over air pollution, coronavirus pandemic and its collateral economic recession have altogether forced the masses to observe Diwalis ritually this year.
Under this given situation, the Centre, as well as a number of state governments, has started advocating for celebrating the occasion with various products designed and produced by local artisans and craftsmen.
Joining this campaign, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said, “From earthen lamps to clothes, this Diwali, let us how support to our artisans by using or gifting local textiles and handicraft items. Make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call of Vocal for Local a mass movement.”
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said, “Let’s go #Vocal4Local to support our local artisans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the clarion call for #Local4Diwali to boost local business, to bring smile on the face of local craftsmen, rural artisans and entrepreneurs who make local products for their living.”
Union Minister of State of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju also joined the campaign and said, “We all love our country. This Diwali let’s follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call of Vocal for local. Let’s come together and light a lamp of hope and resilience in the homes of our artisans, weavers and local businessmen. Let’s go #Local4Diwali.”
It needs mention here that BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda also advocated for the Local4Diwali campaign and he added, “From decorative items to earthen diyas and local crafts, #Local4Diwali not only brings prosperity to the lives of our craftsperson but also symbolises our rich heritage and culture. I earnestly request all to join the clarion call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
