Guwahati: Taking cognizance of the abusive and defamatory posts appeared on various social media sites that involved the Dibrugarh University (DU), the eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district police on Sunday warned the social media users of strict legal action.
On Saturday, the Dibrugarh police, on the basis of an FIR lodged by the DU authority, arrested Dhrubajit Choudhury, an assistant professor of the mathematics department of the University on charges of posting an obscene video online that went viral on social media.
The Dibrugarh police said, “It has come to our notice that a number of people have taken to social media to defame the prestigious university and students enrolled in it based on this incident. We have taken cognizance of the matter and registered a case against some of them. Everyone should know that the case of sharing obscene video is a sub-judice matter now and using it to defame any individual or organisation would attract strict legal action.”
A source of the DU said that the accused confessed his act and disclosed that the video had been recorded in a hotel located in Guwahati three years back.
The source further said, earlier, the DU authority had issued a show-cause notice to Choudhury, after some videos, he had posted online became viral in the DU community.
