Durga Idol, Pandal Made Of Lentils To Take Centre Stage In Nagaon

The Pandal has been constructed in the model of a 'Naamghar'

With just two weeks away for the much awaited festivity, Assam is gearing up to welcome the power diety. While the artisans across the state are busy giving finishing touches to Durga idols, an artisan from Nagaon has sculpted an idol out of lentils.

Creatively-made idols are the center of attraction, drawing maximum number of visitors and devotees, who come from far-off places to have a glimpse of these idols. In a bid to attract revellers, the Nagaon Shani Mandir Puja Committee has come up with this unique idea of making the idols with lentils this year. The Pandal has been constructed in the model of a ‘Naamghar’, a prayer house of Assamese community.

Durga Puja has been a big-fat affair in Nagaon with over 200 committees organizing Pujas with pomp and gaiety.

Skilled artisan, Achyut Saikia and his spouse Jyoti Rani Saikia has stated that they have used one quintal lentils in the pandal and the idols so far and according to them three more quintals of the same will be needed for completing the idol.

“Till now, we have spent a total of Rs 3 lakh to construct the pandal. We expect it to be completed three or four days prior to Shashti“, said Jyoti Rani while speaking to Time8.
