Guwahati: An earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale hits Guwahati city including several districts in Assam on Wednesday morning at around 7.51 am.
Tremors of the quake were so massive that it created a panic in neighbouring states of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh as well, informed sources.
Most parts of the region felt the impact of the massive earthquake as people ran out of their homes and other places in panic.
Many buildings in Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, Guwahati and other places developed cracks.
Damages of properties have also been reported from several other parts of the state.
As per a report by the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at a shallow depth of 17 km with its epicenter in the Assam’s Sonitpur district.
As many as six aftershocks were recorded from various parts of the state of Assam, informed an official from the National Centre of Seismology.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the damages over the phone from Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
PM Modi assured all support to Assam, informed CM Sonowal on his official Twitter handle.
