ECI Seeks Representation from Assam Newspapers over BJP Adv
GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought representation from several newspapers regarding the ‘controversial’ advertisement by BJP published on March 28.
The development came after the Congress party on Sunday moved the ECI demanding action and filing of an FIR against Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP National president JP Nadda and BJP state president Ranjeet Dass.
In its memorandum submitted before the ECI, the opposition party claimed that the advertisement which said that BJP was winning all the seats in Upper Assam (first phase) that went to polls on Saturday was a gross violation of the model code of conduct.
Congress’s communications department in-charge Randeep Surjewala said, “The Election Commission had given a direction on March 26, 2021, saying that if anybody tries to project results of the election between March 27 and April 29, 2021, it will be deemed a crime under section 126 (A) of the Representation of the People Act. Through such advertisements, the BJP has falsely claimed the results of the first phase of polls.”
Reacting to the development, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass said, “Why Congress is so much worried about an advertisement? It’s just an advertisement. If they (Congress) took the help of law then we will also respond lawfully only.”
Controversy erupted on Sunday after an advertisement saying the BJP will win all seats in Upper Assam was published on several local newspapers’ front page.
