Guwahati: Amid outrage over CM Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet’s decision to teach science and mathematics in English from class 3 in government schools in the state, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday claimed that English education in Assamese medium schools from class 3 will open more opportunities for the students in their higher studies.

“This system will not harm the Assamese language. Instead, it will give an advantage to the Assamese medium schools. Not a single Assamese medium school will be closed,” he said.

The minister also alleged that some people are trying to corner the government and spread panic over the new education system. Meanwhile, Pegu has urged the state political parties and organizations to come forward for a discussion.

While giving the example of an English medium school in the Dhemaji constituency, the minister said, “The school has nearly 100 seats but applications of around 2,000 candidates were received. This shows the student’s interest in the English language.”

Meanwhile, preparations for imparting medical education in the Assamese medium are at an advanced stage.
