Guwahati: The India Metrological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted that enhanced rainfall activity over the Northeastern states is very likely to continue till May 17, 2022.
The IMD in a press statement stated that a north-south trough at 3.1 km above mean sea level runs roughly along Long.88°E to the north of Lat.22°N.
Also, the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is taking place over to Northeast India due to strong lower level southerly/ southwesterly winds during May 13-17, 2022.Under the influence of the above systems, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places are very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam- Meghalaya, Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura and thunderstorm/lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Meghalaya during May 13-17, 2022.
Probable Impacts
- Visibility may become poor due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion.
- Temporary Disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads/ uprooting of trees/ breaking of tree branches leading to increased travel time.
- Temporary disruption in ferry services may be due to strong winds/gusty winds.
- Water logging / flooding in many parts of low lying area.
- Partial damages to kutcha houses and huts.
- Land slides/mud slide/land slip very likely
- Possibility of damages to vulnerable structures due to Heavy-Very Heavy rainfall/Landslides.
- Heavy rainfall may damage the crop in the maturity stage.
- Lightning may injure people and cattle in open places.
Actions suggested
- Follow traffic advisories issued, if any.
- Avoid going to areas that face water logging problem often.
- Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
- Provide proper drainage in the cropped field if heavy rainfall is expected.
- Propping of the vegetable pandals recommended.
- Take shelter during thunderstorm/lightning activities.
