Guwahati, July 11: Following allegations by the locals for damaging the roads in the Sixmile-Narengi-VIP area, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Wednesday stated in an exclusive mail that it is only the funding agency and not the executing agency for the Guwahati Water & Sanitation Supply Project.
It may be recalled that the locals of Sixmile-Narengi-VIP Road areas in Guwahati had accused that JICA had dug up the roads for laying pipes for the water supply project and destroyed the roads in Guwahati. The story along with a video was published by TIME8 on July 6.
On Wednesday, the JICA contacted TIME8 and clarified that it can’t be blamed for the potholes in Guwahati roads. JICA said that it is the “funding agency for the Project and Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board (GMDWSB) is the executing agency for the said Project”.
Takayoshi Tange, Senior Representative, JICA stated, “The loan projects supported through JICA’s assistance are executed by central and state government agencies. The JICA provides financial assistance to the projects. The roles of JICA and Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board (GMDWSB) have been misinterpreted”.
Tange further added, “The JICA is the financial body only while the GMDWSB, Government of Assam is the implementing body, who is responsible for undertaking the project implementation.”
It must be noted that the proposed water supply projects for Guwahati still remains incomplete and instead the people of the city are going through numerous hardship as roads across the city have been dug up for the water supply projects.
