GUWAHATI: Firing in Kokrajhar Assam Police had to resort to blank fire to disperse a mob who was allegedly trying to encroach forest lands near Saralpara under Ultapani reserve forest along the Indo-Bhutan foothills area in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday.
At least 16 persons have been arrested in connection to the case and several others were on the run.
Kokarjhar Police Superintendent Rakesh Roshan said that the mob has also damaged the official vehicles of the forest department during the clash.
“Sharp weapons, vehicles and other incriminating items were seized from their possession. A similar incident had also happened a month back. However, this group is new. An investigation is on to dig more,” the SP said.
Firing in Kokrajhar Forest department officials claimed that around 50 rounds were fired by the security personnel as hundreds of men with sharp weapons like a machete and other items started to attack them.
“There were several hundreds of them. They were trying to encroach the forest land and when we tried to stop them, they attacked us and damaged our vehicles. The situation is much tensed,” a forest official added.
