    First consignment of COVID-19 vaccine departs for Guwahati

    The Guwahati Airport authorities informed that the vaccine would arrive in the state at 5 pm on Tuesday.

    Guwahati: The Serum Institute of India (SII) dispatched the first consignment of Covidshield vaccine on early Tuesday morning.

    The first batch of the vaccine is likely to reach Guwahati today, as a special flight carrying the vaccine has departed from Pune.

    The Guwahati Airport authorities informed that the vaccine would arrive in the state at 5 pm on Tuesday.

    It is known that, three trucks headed from SII premises towards Pune Airport at 5 am. The vaccines will be taken to other parts of the country using cargo planes.

    Reportedly, eight flights would transport Covidshield vaccines from Pune International Airport to 13 different locations today.  

    The vaccines will be flown to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Karnal, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guwahati, Lucknow, Chandigarh and Bhubaneshwar.

    The central government has places a purchase order with the Pune-based SII for 11 million doses of Oxford Covid-19 vaccines, Covidshield, at a cost of Rs 210 per dose.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that the State governments would not have to pay for vaccination core healthcare and frontline workers.
