Former Indian football captain will play at the International Veteran Football Championship 2020 scheduled in Guwahati from January 30th, 2020- February 2nd, 2020. The football icon will take part in the game after a long break.
Baichung will play for the United Sikkim Veterans in the opening match of the 6th edition of the football championship organized by the United Brothers’ Club here. The four days match will be held at the Sports Authority of India field.
Several other football teams from across the country are reported to take part in the event including the participation of Jessore Club from Bangladesh, Nepal.
The champion will take home a cash reward of Rs 50,000 along with the trophy and the runners up will receive Rs 30,000 and the trophy.
It may be mentioned that Bhutia is considered the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena. He is often nicknamed as the Sikkimese Sniper because of his shooting skills in football.
His international footballing honours include winning the Nehru Cup, LG Cup, SAFF Championship three times and the AFC Challenge Cup. He is also India’s second-most capped player with 82 international caps to his name. He is India’s second-youngest international goal scorer.
Bhutia who has a football stadium named after him is the winner of the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri.
