Popular Assamese singer and the heartthrob of the young generation Zubeen Garg, while reiterating his opposing stand over the amendment Citizenship Act, on December 27th, 2019 appealed the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to be ‘Sarba da’ people used to know.
Zubeen shared a screenshot of a Twitter post shared by UN Geneva on his official Facebook page and wrote, “Dear Sarbananda Sonowal Da, forget us. Forget Samujjal Da or Hiren Gohain Sir or Akhil or anyone. Forget Zubeen Garg. This is coming from the United Nations. This is not a joke anymore. Once, at least for once be the Sarbada we used to know in front of Modi and Amit Shah. This has to come to an end.”
The post shared by the UN Geneva on Twitter on December 26th, 2019, reads: “We are concerned that India’s new Citizenship Amendment Act is fundamentally discriminatory in nature & hope the Supreme Court of #India will consider carefully the compatibility of the law with India’s int’l human rights obligations.”
Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), on December 13th, 2019, said, “Although India’s broader naturalization laws remain in place, these amendments will have a discriminatory effect on people’s access to nationality. It appears to undermine India’s commitment to equality before the law, as enshrined in its Constitution.”
It needs to be mentioned that the artistes’ fraternity has also been continuously raising their voice along with the political parties and organisations against the contentious law.
