Forest guard injured during elephant attack in Assam; in critical condition

Guwahati: A forest guard was critically injured during an elephant attack in Lanka area of Hojai district of Assam on Tuesday.

The forest official was identified as Shivajit Sharma who was injured while attempting to chase away a herd of wild elephants.

Reportedly, the group of wild tuskers wandered out into villages from the forest in search of food. While a forest team was attempting to chase away the elephants, one of them turned and attacked the team.

Shivajit was injured following the incident but he somehow managed to save his life. He was later rushed to Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Hospital.

It may be mentioned here that, over the past few days, man-elephant conflict has been on the rise. There were various reports of elephant attacking people which resulted in death of the victims.

One such incident was reported on Sunday, when a 45-year-old man named Rajib Gogoi was trampled to death by a wild elephant in upper Assam’s Margherita West Range forest office of Digboi Forest Division under Tinsukia district.
