Ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, former All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) president, Promod Boro has formally joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Boro joined Rajya Sabha MP, Urkhao Gwra Brahma led UPPL at the two-day long convention of the party in Chirang on February 21st, 2020. He was appointed the working president of the party.
The former students’ leader joining active politics gain importance as the BTC election is scheduled to be held in mid-April. The UPPL is the major opponent for the Hagrama Mohilary led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), an ally of BJP, in the BTC polls.
The ABSU is one of the signatories of the Bodo Accord signed on January 27th, 2020. The Union home ministry on January 27th, 2020 signed a historic Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with all the factions of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and Assam government.
In the last BTC polls, the UPPL was backed by the ABSU and the NDFB. The UPPL had fielded candidates in 15 seats and won seven seats in 2015 BTC elections.
