Putting all speculations to rest, former Tezpur Lok Sabha MP in Assam Ram Prasad Sarmah is all set to join the Nitish Kumar led Janata Dal (United) JD(U) in New Delhi on August 17th, 2019.
Sarmah had resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2019. In a Facebook post, the politician wrote that he felt insulted when his name did not find a place in the shortlisted panel of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.
Confirming the news, ST Bordoloi, secretary, JD(U) Assam informed that Sarmah has already reached New Delhi and the joining-in ceremony is likely to place around 1 pm.
Though rumour mills were abuzz that NEDA convenor and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would contest from Tezpur, the BJP named Assam Minister Pallab Lochan Das as its candidate for Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency. Defeating his main opponent, Congress’ MGVK Bhanu, Das won with a margin of 24,28,41 votes.
Speaking to media persons here, Sarmah has earlier said that the old BJP workers of Assam, who have been toiling for decades, are the most ‘neglected and ill-treated’ in the BJP by the ‘new intruders’ in the party.
