GUWAHATI: Cry for the release of anti CAA leader Akhil Gogoi this time has triggered waves on Brahmaputra rivers.
On Tuesday, braving the floodwaters, hundreds of fishermen, boatmen, flood-affected people, farmers and native villagers of Chenimari area under Senga assembly constituency, located in lower Assam’s Barpeta district, staged protest sailing through the river Brahmaputra using a country boat and demanded the immediate release of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi.
Coordinated by the Bohori unit of the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), the protesters demanded the unconditional and immediate release of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader. Residents of the nearby villages – Chenimari, Rowmari, Chata, Chenglidia and Malipara also attended the protest.
SMSS leader Babul Hussain said, “Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi is not alone. The people of Assam, from Sadiya to the westernmost Dhubri district have now realised the injustice done to KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi. We will intensify our united fight to release Gogoi.”
Across the state, the people of Assam have been staging protests in different ways – lighting earthen lamps at namghars and individual residents, offering prayers at various temples, observing rituals and on the streets, demanding unconditional release of Akhil Gogoi ever since the beginning of Gogoi’s imprisonment.
Recently, the youths of the state in particular also launched a ‘release Akhil Gogoi’ digital campaign that created a virtual wave of protests.
