GUWAHATI: Assam Police’s one of the most wanted persons and a Bengali nationalist and political commentator, Garga Chatterjee has tendered an ‘unconditional’ apology to the people of Assam for his earlier defamatory comment on Swargodew Sukafa on Saturday. However, Assam police said that as per as the case is concerned, the legal procedure will continue and take its own course.
Chatterjee in June termed the founder of the Ahom dynasty- Sau Lung Sukapha a Chinese invader, in one of his social media posts that sparked statewide protests.
Taking it to his Twitter account, he posted a video in which he said, “In this holy month of Bhada, when we all remember the spirit of khyoma (forgiveness) and prem (love) preached by Saint Mohapurush Srimanta Sankardev, I pray the spirit of forgiveness of the people of Assam and honourable chief minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal. Please accept my unconditional apology.”
Chatterjee said, “From the core of my heart I unconditionally apology to all the people of Assam including the Tai Ahom Community through chief minister Sonowal for any previous social media post that may have unintentionally hurt anyone’s sentiment. I express deepest regards and respect for Swargodew Sukafa’s exemplary role as architect of Bor Asom forming greater Assamese identity and the rich legacy of his dynasty and civilization that is part and parcel of our diverse and great Indian civilization.”
The video further added Chatterjee saying, “In future, I will never make any social media post that may hurt the sentiments of the people of Assam. I have stopped all social media activities since June 19. I request the people of Assam to forgive for not apologising sooner which I should have done.”
However, the post did not make any change to the state police’s action. Commissioner of police, Guwahati police commissionerate, MP Gupta said, “The apology tendered by accused Garga Chatterjee does not matter to the case anyway. The legal proceedings will continue against him.”
Earlier, on August 14, Chatterjee though moved the Gauhati high court seeking relief and a prayer for quashing the case against him, the high court dismissed the prayer and asked the crime branch to furnish the case diary within September 11.
With the latest development, now the crime branch has left with no choice but to nab Chatterjee and produce him before the lower court here.
The lower court in its order had said, “The court deems it fit to issue a fresh warrant of arrest against the accused Garga Chatterjee with a direction to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata (West Bengal) to execute the warrant of arrest and produce the accused Garga Chatterjee before this Court positively on the next date fixed. A copy of this order be sent to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata (West Bengal) and DGP, West Bengal for information and necessary action.”
The court has asked the crime branch to produce Chatterjee on August 27.
Top police sources said that the city police have been currently planning to send a team of police to Kolkata shortly for the second time and to communicate with their counterparts in West Bengal.
