GATE 2022 plea: Supreme Court refuses to postpone exam
Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to postpone GATE 2022, which I scheduled to begin from February 5.
SC said, “Interfering in the exam process just 48 hours before it commences could result in chaos and uncertainty.”
The bench headed by Justice DT Chandrachud and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath said that the top court is not willing to entertain a petition 48 hours before exam.
The bench said that it is a matter of academic policy as to when the examination should be held and the court cannot enter this arena.
It noted that 9 lakh students are to appear in the examination and around 20,000 students have signed an online petition for postponing the examination.
Earlier, candidates appearing for the examination filed three petitions seeking deferment of the exam citing the COVID-19 pandemic and curbs imposed across the country to check he rise in infections.
GATE is conducted for admission to master’s programmes and for recruitment to some public sector companies. The notification for GATE was issued in August and the admit cards were issued last month.
