Guwahati, October 4: The Gauhati High Court has sent a notice to the Assam government and the Centre asking to clear the confusion on how the name of the city should be spelt- Guwahati or Gauhati?.
A ten weeks time has been served to file an affidavit and correct the nomenclature of the capital city of Assam.
The notice has also been served to Gauhati University, Gauhati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and to the Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court.
Acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate and writer Arup Borbora in order to end the confusion in the spelling of the city’s name, the Gauhati High Court sent the notice.
Numerous prominent institutions like Gauhati University, Gauhati High Court, Gauhati Commerce College, etc. in the city have been using the old spelling ‘Gauhati’ as they were established in the British era. While some new establishments are using ‘Guwahati’ as the spelling.
