Gloves for Voters, Postal Ballots for COVID-19 Patients: CEO Assam
GUWAHATI: Voters will be provided with disposable gloves as they press the EVM button in the ensuing Assam assembly polls slated on March 27, April 1 and April 6, said Assam Chief Electoral Officer, Nitin Khade, on Saturday.
The CEO Assam said that this time polls will be conducted with utmost precautions in terms of safety from coronavirus.
Khade said, “As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines, we have prepared to set up auxiliary polling stations to distribute the voters so that the polling stations will be free from the crowd. In Assam, this time, at least 5325 additional auxiliary polling stations will be created taking the total numbers of polling stations in the state to 33530.”
As per the ECI guidelines, not more than 1000 voters are allowed at a single polling station.
The CEO Assam informed that in Assam, at least 2, 31, 86,362 persons were registered as eligible to cast their votes. Out of them, while 1, 17, 42, 681 are male, 1, 14, 43, 681 are female. There are at least 442 third-gender voters registered in Assam in this poll.
At least 1, 08, 596 are D’ voters in Assam, the CEO informed.
He also said that COVID-19 patients in quarantine will be allowed to cast their votes via postal ballots. A waiting arena will also be set up in all the polling stations so that people can maintain social distancing while in queues.
“Because of the increasing numbers of polling stations and rise in the numbers of polling personnel and logistics, at least 40 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were allotted to the state. However, we are expecting more,” he added.
At least 2.41 lakh polling personnel will be engaged in the state polls.
