Those found spitting and urinating in public in the areas under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will have to pay an on-the-spot Rs 1,000 fine, the civic body said on April 19th, 2020, aiming to contain the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The order comes in compliance with the revised consolidated directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which made spitting in public spaces a punishable offence under Section 51 (b) of the Disaster Management Act.

The MHA has also prohibited the sale of tobacco and liquor during the COVID-19 lockdown. The ministry has also made the wearing of face masks and practising social distancing at public places mandatory.

In compliance with the MHA directives, the GMC banned the sale of liquor, gutka and tobacco until further order.
