Government Bans Import Of Pigs In Mizoram

Aizawl, February 1, 2019

The deputy commissioners of all the eight districts in Mizoram on February 1st, 2019 have issued orders banning import of pigs and piglets from other countries in view of possible outbreak of the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). An official said, “The orders are issued keeping in view the outbreak of dreaded PRRS which usually occurs from March to July every year.”

According to official reports, the PRRS had killed as many as 3,806 swine in 2013 and 4,699 and 2,574 pigs in 2016 and 2018 respectively. It was suspected that the PRRS outbreak was due to illegal and even legal import of pigs and piglets from Myanmar where there was reported prevalence of the porcine disease, the officials added.
