GU student Dipjyoti Gogoi arrested for posting ‘fake photo’ granted bail

Gogoi landed in controversy after he had allegedly attempted to cheat people out of their hard-earned money through social media

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted the bail of Gauhati University (GU) student Dipjyoti Gogoi, who was arrested by the police from Sivasagar on July 20 for circulating a fake photo of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on social media.

The high court granted him bail against a surety of Rs 30,000.

Gogoi landed in controversy after he had allegedly attempted to cheat people out of their hard-earned money through social media, police said. Gogoi, who runs a Facebook page, had reportedly posted a link routing to a bank that was supposed to help the flood-affected victims of Assam.

The student was picked up the Sivasagar Police for allegedly cheating and dishonestly delivery of property under the IPC sections 420, 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), and Section 66A of the Information Technology Act.

Gogoi, who is a second-semester student at the Gauhati University, was subsequently handed over to Guwahati Police for further course of action.

The student is likely to be out from jail on Tuesday.
