Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday once again tossed the gruesome murder case of Shraddha in Mumbai to corner the Congress party during his campaigning for BJP ahead of Gujrat polls.

Addressing the media in Ahmedabad, Sarma blamed Congress ‘appeasement politics’ for the Maharashtra Police not registering an FIR on Shraddha Walker’s complaint in 2020.

He alleged that it was Congress’s appeasement politics that had led to the incident of ‘love jihad’ and encouraged Aftab to continue torturing Shraddha and eventually killing her in a barbaric manner. Aftab had allegedly chopped Shraddha into some 35 pieces, stored the body parts in a refrigerator and dumped the body parts in forest areas for almost a month.

Sarma said, “It has come to light that when Shraddha reached out to the police and filed a complaint in 2020, the then Congress-Shiv Sena-led government did not pay any heed to it. The police didn’t register Shraddha’s FIR after being intimidated. While in any state if anyone lodges an FIR citing a death threat, it becomes a criminal case, but it’s due to Congress’s appeasement politics that such incidents of love jihad were overlooked.”

“When a criminal case is filed, it becomes the property of the state. Even the victim doesn’t have permission to withdraw it. You can withdraw if it is a civil case. Because of Congress’ appeasement politics, a specific community of people became fearless of the law. Congress has created an eco-system in the country where love jihad incidents are random,” he added.

Sarma reiterated the need for a stern law against love jihad in the country. “A strict law against love jihad is only possible if Narendra Modi-led government continues to be in power in Centre and state. If Congress would have acted, Shraddha would have been alive now,” the Assam chief minister stated.

Sarma who has been vocal against ‘love jihad’ from time to time, after becoming the chief minister of the state had said that the state government has proposed a ‘Marriage law’ to check on ‘love jihad’ cases.

He had informed that under the proposed legislation, the bride and groom will have to disclose their religion and income in official documents a month before the wedding and will encompass all communities.

“Love jihad doesn’t only mean a Muslim cheating a Hindu. It could happen among Hindus as well. If a Hindu boy uses dubious means to entrap and marry a Hindu girl that is also a form of ‘love jihad’,” Sarma had remarked.

However, the term “love jihad”, often used by right-wing activists to describe relationships between Muslim men and Hindu women, is not an officially recognize syllable.

He also once again hit Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his ‘bearded’ look and said that his statement on Rahul Gandhi went viral only because of Congress trolls. He had made a statement on Rahul Gandhi’s latest look saying that he nowadays looked like Saddam Hussain.

“It was my personal opinion and Congress people got agitated. I have not compared him with Bahadur Shah Jafar. Congress must not forget the way they have made comments on the country’s Prime Minister from time to time before teaching me what to say,” Sarma hit back.
