Guwahati: All app-based cab and bike taxi services in the city were likely to discontinue from February as the All Assam Cab Mazdoor Sangha and All Guwahati Bike Taxi Operator Union have decided to stop their services in Guwahati from February 1.

On Monday, addressing the media, the union members said that the decision was taken against the alleged exploitation by the service provider companies in the city.

Around 18,000 vehicles have been plying on the roads under the local and international cab service operators.

Earlier, in November last year also, the cab drivers announced a strike alleging exploitation by the operator companies and not addressing their demands for a fair fare rate.

Denizens in the city also have been complaining about the illegal money collection by the drivers and riders of such cab services for over a year.

In the city, cab drivers and bike pilots have been charging more amount than fixed by their respective applications citing the alleged looting by the companies in the name of the commission.

Despite the Kamrup (metro) district administration promised to intervene and regulate the fares last year, the attempt failed with no serious enforcement over the app-based cab and bike taxi service providers.

The drivers union has requested the state government to initiate its own app for taxi services in the state.
