Guwahati: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked the Kamrup (metro) district administration to repeat the COVID 19 tests of the Guwahati central jail prisoners to keep a track on their health status.
The decision by the state health department came after a great confusion happened amongst many in the state when two of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leaders Bitu Sonowal and Dhajya Konwar, both jail inmates, tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Questions were raised regarding the health condition of anti- CAA leader Akhil Gogoi. People were asking the health minister for clarity.
Sarma said, “On Friday at least 19 prison inmates including Ranjan Daimary tested COVID 19 positive and another 33 inmates tested of COVID 19 positive on Saturday.”
“Therefore, all the inmates in the prison should be checked regularly as the virus may infect anyone. We believe in aggressive testing and therefore I have asked Metro DC to conduct repeated rounds of tests amongst the prisoners,” he added further.
On Saturday, the Kamrup Metro administration has declared the Guwahati Central Jail campus as a containment zone till further order.
