GUWAHATI: Tension gripped the city after 15 suspected miscreants from other religion allegedly offered Namaz at a mosque in the Beltola area here on Sunday evening.
Following suspicion, though locals nabbed nine of the group and handed them over to Basistha police, the accused were later released on bail. The city police have registered a case.
An official of the mosque committee told TIME8, “It’s a highly sensitive matter, but city police have let them go on bail. We are very upset with the city police’s role.”
The committee members claimed that locals in the mosque had found that the 15 persons were offering Namaz in different ways (not in the usual religious way) triggering suspicion. Though they immediately questioned the group and enquired about their identities, six out of them fled the spot.
“The people who entered the mosque claimed that they have converted to Islam about a month back. But we don’t believe their claims and suspect that it was an attempt to create disturbance in the society,” mosque committee members alleged.
Guwahati Police Joint Commissioner Debraj Upadhyay said, “Since they were booked under sections which are bailable, they were released. Since the matter is very sensitive, we don’t want to reveal their identities now, but an investigation is ongoing.”
