Guwahati: Students from various colleges in Guwahati carried out candle march in the city on Thursday protesting against the Hathras gangrape case where a 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and tortured by four men.
The protest was organised by National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), where students from Gauhati University, Gauhati Commerce College, Cotton University, B Baruah College, Gauhati College and many more joined the march seeking justice for the 19-year-old victim.
Speaking to TIME8, one of the protesters said “It is of no use to shout ‘Bharat Maata Ki Jai’ when her daughters are going through such brutalities. It’s now or never! Everyone should voice up for her and be the voice of each and every girl.”
Protests and candle march were carried out in all over India, after reports claimed that Uttar Pradesh Police “forcibly” cremated the body of the Hathras rape victim in the dead of the night on Tuesday.
The reports also elicited angry responses on social media, and from opposition leaders in the country who sought chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation over the issue.
The opposition also alleged that the ‘forced’ cremation of the young Dalit girl was “an attempt to destroy evidence”.
The 19-year-old was attacked while she was out cutting grass on September 14 in Hathras, a district in Uttar Pradesh. She was dragged from a field and allegedly gang raped and tortured.
The woman was found her family naked, bleeding, and paralysed, her tongue split and her spine broken.
