Hearing for Akhil Gogoi’s ‘bail’ begins; High Court serves notice to NIA

GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court on Monday issued notice and directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file its detail objection against anti-CAA leader AKhil Gogoi’s bail order before October 13.

A member of Akhil Gogoi’s legal team Rahul Shensua said, “On August 7, the NIA Court rejected a bail order of Akhil Gogoi. We appealed against the rejection and accordingly the hearing was scheduled today at the division bench of the Gauhati High Court. The division bench of Justice KR Surana and Justice Ajit Borthakur heard the argument and issued notice to the NIA. NIA asked for four weeks of time to file an objection; however, the division bench rejected NIA’s plea and directed to file the objection within October 13.”

According to counsel Shensua, the next hearing will begin from October 13.

On Monday, akhil Gogoi was represented by senior counsel PS Naramsimha and Shantanu Borthakur.

Gogoi has been accused of sedition while ‘spearheading’ the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Assam.

Earlier, Manash Konwar, Dharya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti got bail from the NIA earlier. However, the NIA challenged the bail order and the matter is now at the Gauhati High Court.

Gogoi was arrested from Jorhat in December last year. Two days later, he was handed over to the NIA in a case registered against him earlier by the Chandmari police station in Guwahati. The case pertains to his alleged link with the CPI Maoists.
