Assam finance minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to contest the ensuing Lok Sabha polls for the very first time.
Sarma who is an MLA from Jalukbari constituency is reported to make his parliamentary poll debut from Tezpur Lok Sabha seat.
BJP’s state chief, Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that Sarma must contest the parliamentary polls provided that he contests from Assam. On the other hand, Sarma had also expressed his will to contest MP election as per his plan to leave state politics and join the national politics.
Sarma won the 2016 Assembly elections and was sworn in as Cabinet Minister on May 24th, 2016. He is presently holding portfolios of Finance, Transformation & Development, Health & Family Welfare and PWD. The BJP leadership appointed him the convener of the newly constituted North-East Democratic Alliance.
The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019, the Election Commission announced on March 10th, 2019.
