GUWAHATI: Once the ‘blue-eyed boy’ of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi who died on Monday following prolonged illness, state’s health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recalled his days with the Congress veteran.
Sarma dug it deep and shared an image of him standing beside the late Gogoi after the former won the 2001 state polls from the city’s Jalukbaari constituency. He has been serving as an MLA from the Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from Indian National Congress and from May 2016 as a Bharatiya Janata Party member.
Known as closest of Gogoi once, Sarma joined BJP in August 2015 after a political tussle between the two. Later the duo became each other’s sharp critics.
Sarma posting an image on his official Twitter handle wrote, “In 2001. After my first election victory from Jalukbari LAC. #TributeToTarunGogoi”
Saddened by the demise of the Congress stalwart, the BJP minister added, “A man of grand vision and extraordinary passion, Tarun Gogoi was an intensely people’s man, focused on progress and enjoyed the support of all. I was lucky to have worked under him. He rescued Assam from a period of darkness and led it for 15 yrs ensuring a new phase of development.”
He added further that Gogoi’s demise was a huge loss and his absence will mean a vacuum in Assam’s politics that shall be difficult to fill.
Earlier on Wednesday, he also inspected the preparation of the cremation ceremony to be held at the city’s Nabagraha crematorium on Thursday.
