In wake of a controversy triggered by a series of tweets by activist and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement leader Shehla Rashid on alleged ‘torture’ of civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, NEDA convenor and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 19th, 2019 demanded ‘sedition’ charge should be initiated against her.

Sarma also lashed out at those coming out in support of Rashid. “The tweets of Pakistan Prime Minister and these people (Rashid and others) are same. Seditious charges must be slapped on her,” Sarma told reporters in New Delhi.

It may be mentioned that Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava has filed a criminal complaint against Rashid over her allegations against the Army on the situation in Kashmir.

On August 18th, 2019, Rashid, in a series of tweets, accused the Indian Army of “torturing” the locals in the guise of “interrogating” them and creating an “environment of fear” in Shopian, Kashmir.

“I think the people of Jammu and Kashmir are totally with the people of the government. They are supporting the move for long-term peace and tranquillity. But this tukde-tukde gang, the Left and so-called secular people like Shehla Rashid are spreading rumours and lies. I think the time has come to take the strongest possible action against these people because they are dancing to the tune of Pakistan,” he told reporters.

He added, “If you look at the tweets of Imran Khan (Pakistan Prime Minister) and all these people, you will not find any difference. Basically, they are dancing to the tune of Pakistan. Sedition case should be registered against them.”
