Assam Congress president Ripun Bora on December 18th, 2019, said that Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s claim about Congress workers’ involvement in the violence during the protest over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was ‘fabricated’.
“It was totally fabricated. He (Himanta Biswa Sarma) is forcefully trying to establish displaying footages that Congress was involved in the violence during the protests over the act in the city,” Bora said in Guwahati.
Talking about the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by deputy inspector general (CID) Mridulananda Sarmah to probe the incidents of violence, Bora said, “Why has the government constituted the SIT? The government should order a sitting judge level probe into the matter if the government has courage.”
Talking about the minister’s claim about the involvement of an intellectual in the violent protest, Bora asked Sarma to reveal the name of the person.
While slamming the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) over its role in the act issue, Bora said, “AGP has betrayed the people of the state. The party called on the governor which is meaningless.”
Condemning the arrest of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti chief Akhil Gogoi, Bora said, “He was not anti-national. We will move the Human Rights Commission.”
Earlier today, Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference claimed that a “deadliest” attack was planned to demolish Guwahati city during the recent street violence over the controversial the Act. Sarma also displayed photos of the violence indicating Youth Congress president Kamrul Islam’s presence at a site of arson.
