Guwahati: A “Peace and Healing Prayer Festival” held at Naharkatia in Dibrugarh district by a church missing network was under police radar for the last two days. The security forces received a tip that a religious conversation activity was undergoing in the event.

Immediately police swung into action and arrested three Swedish nationals from the event. However, they were arrested for allegedly violating visa norms by involving in conversion activities. The event was being held from October 25 to 27.

Police said that trio came to India on tourist visa recently, but they were allegedly found to be involved in religious preaching activities.

They were identified as Hannah Mikaela Bloom, Marcus Arne Henrik Bloom, and Susanna Elisabeth Hakanason. Police said they were trying to lure people to convert to Christianity in tea garden areas in the region, and they were arrested while running a proselytization event.

In the event, people mostly from the tea garden workers’ community were invited to seek blessings of god and to get healed from deceases. However, they were influenced to convert into Christianity, said police in Naharkatia.

“They are in India as tourists and the tourist visa doesn’t permit preaching or delivering lectures to public,” police added. They were booked for violation as per the section 14 Foreigners Act and a case has been registered.

In court, the trio was found to be violating the visa norms and the court directed the police and authorities to take steps for their deportation. Later, they were freed after paying fines totaling US $500 each (Rs 41,500).

The Naharkatia police have sent the trio to Guwahati on Thursday for further action till they would be deported to Sweden.

It was learnt that the event was organized with due permission of the district authorities. Following the arrest of the trio, locals also staged protest against police.
