Humiliated Over ‘Foreigner’ Tag, Assam Man Kills Self By Drinking Poison

The locals claimed that Jangsher Ali was depressed after his name was excluded from the final National Register of Citizens list

A 68-year-old man has allegedly committed suicide in Kamrup district of Assam after being declared ‘foreigner’.

The deceased identified as Jangsher Ali reportedly drank poison on the night of October 12th, 2019. The incident took place at Champupara Gaon village located in Goroimari Tehsil of Kamrup district. The locals claimed that Ali was under distress since the exclusion of his name from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.

“He was sad and staying aloof ever since the list was published in August. He was born and brought up in this village. Despite submitting legacy data and other requisite documents, his citizenship was questioned. He mentally broke down after being declared a foreigner and failing to find his name in the final NRC list,” a local said.

The local residents came down heavily on the NRC authorities and Assam government for “harassing” genuine citizens.

“His (Ali) family’s name had appeared in the voter’s list of 1985 and 1989. However, in 2005 Ali’s name appeared as Dashar Ali and since then he had been running from pillar to post to prove his citizenship,” another local added.

The Assam government on August 31st, 2019 published the final NRC. A total of 3,11,21,004 crore people made it to the final list leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit claims. The list displaying individual statuses of all the applicants was published online on September 14th, 2019.
