Guwahati, November 8: The annual harvest festival of the Garos – Hundred Drums Wangala Festival – kicked off at Asananggre village of Rongram Block in West Garo Hills on Thursday.
The three-day festival started with an eco marathon on Thursday. Ten Wangala troupes will take part in the beating of a hundred traditional drums (dama) as the young maidens dance alongside.
“On the happy occasion of the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival, I extend my warmest greetings to all the people of the State particularly the Garo community. May this Festival of Thanksgiving, which proudly represents our rich cultural and traditional heritage, promote the spirit of unity and integration which is the essence of a vibrant and progressive society. I wish you all a Happy Wangala Festival (sic),” Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister wrote on his Facebook timeline.
In this post harvest festival, they give thanks to Misi Saljong (also known as Pattigipa Ra’rongipa), the sun god, for blessing the people with a rich harvest. The first Hundred Drums Wangala Festival was organized on December 6-7, 1976 at Asanang, near the Rongram C&RD Block Office, 18 km from Tura.
