Former Chief Minister of Assam and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on April 25th, 2019 said that the Congress Party could not take the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to the grass root level.

Gogoi said,”I admit that we (Congress) couldn’t take Citizenship Bill to the grassroots level nor could the indigenous groups and organizations. We didn’t witness the impact of Citizenship Bill in the rural areas the way it should have been,”.

“Most of the rural people have no idea about the contentious Bill despite of the massive agitations across the state. Only a few sections of people in Assam are aware of the Bill.”, added Gogoi.

Gogoi condemned BJP chief, Amit Shah’s statement who had said that their party would first bring in the Citizenship Amendment Bill(CAB) and then implement NRC.

“Amit Shah always neglects the people of Northeast. He is least bothered about the sentiments of Northeastern people.”, said Gogoi while addressing a presser in Guwahati.

The Congress leader also lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his interview with Bollywood star Akshay Kumar and dubbed it as a ‘Drama’. “He was asked about sweets and other irrelevant things. Why wasn’t he asked about his wife, his tea stall.”, said Gogoi mocking PM Modi.
