In A First, Assam Troupe To Perform Shankadev’s Bhaona In English In Dubai

Jamugurihat: After delivering two successful English ‘bhaonas’ (a traditional form of entertainment with religious messages) in New Delhi and Mumbai earlier this year, Prajanma Umesh, a socio-cultural organization from Jamugurihat, Sonitpur district of Assam is now preparing for their maiden international show that will be held in Dubai in the month of September.

The artistes are busy in rehearsals since the last one month and their sole aim is to spread the great works and the messages of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva.

Arup Saikia, the director of the ‘bhaona’ while speaking to Time8said, “This will be our first international show and I have translated the ‘Keligopal’ and ‘Ravan Badh’ into English which we will perform there. We have been invited by the Indian origin and Assamese people residing in Dubai and it is an immense pleasure to be invited in an international stage.”

He also added that many youths from Jamagurihat have built an interest in the field of ‘bhaona’ and a total of 30 artistes will be performing in Dubai. “This is the first baby step towards popularizing the messages of our great teacher and in the future, we will perform shows in other countries,” Saikia added.

It may be mentioned, the English version of the ‘Udyogparba’, a bhaona, which was directed by Saikia, was performed on September 15th, 2018 last at Srimanta Sankardeva auditorium in New Delhi. On January 11th, 2019, the group performed the English version  ‘Ravan Badh’ in Mumbai’s SIDCO Exhibition Centre Auditorium.
